Sporting Success at SFX

Another busy term of sport has flown by at SFX, showcasing numerous individual and team successes that highlight our strong sporting culture.

As featured in our recent social media posts, our Year 7/8 Girls’ Katrina Fanning 9’s side traveled to Wagga Wagga for the Southern NSW Finals. This was already a significant achievement, as reaching this stage meant they were the best team from Canberra and the Far South Coast. Early on game day, the girls set off for Wagga Wagga and prepared to give their best.

In their opening match, they faced a formidable Warilla team with some powerful ball runners. Despite scoring an impressive team try early in the game, Warilla pulled ahead with late tries to secure the win. The next two matches followed a similar pattern, with Temora and Red Bend College having larger squads and a clear physical advantage. Our SFX girls were competitive but were narrowly defeated. In their final game, they played against a strong Nowra side, who had already won two games earlier in the day. SFX scored what was arguably the try of the day early on, thanks to dynamic running from Bernice and defended resolutely. They finished with a thrilling 14-12 victory. The girls represented the College with distinction and should be immensely proud of their efforts.

Our 9/10 Soccer teams also had a fantastic run at the Northside Gala Days. The boys started strongly with a 3-0 win over Melba Copland, featuring a spectacular long-range goal from Seb Munoz, Finn Dykes and Archer Stirling also contributed to the scoreline. In the second game, despite creating numerous opportunities, we were unable to score against Belconnen, leading to a penalty shootout. Ewan Bellairs made three crucial saves, sending us through to the quarterfinals in first place.

In the Quarter Finals, SFX faced Daramalan, favorites to win the competition. An outstanding defensive performance from Luka Sekar, Anthony Miniutti, Liam Molloy and Angelino Schiavello kept Daramalan scoreless. Ewan Bellairs again shone in the penalty shootout, helping us advance to the semi-final against Amaroo. In a tense match, Leo Braybon clinched a crucial goal late in the game. The boys maintained composure despite provocations from Amaroo’s team, showcasing both their skill and sportsmanship. Anthony Miniutti and Harrison Pole displayed remarkable poise. Unfortunately, we narrowly lost 1-0 in the grand final to Kaleen. Despite this, the boys’ performance throughout the tournament was commendable, and they will compete in the ACT tournament against the Southside finalists in the coming weeks.

The 9/10 Girls’ team also had a stellar performance at the Gala Day, finishing top of their pool with an undefeated record in four matches. They advanced to the semifinals but were narrowly defeated in a penalty shootout against JPC after a goalless draw in regular time. Their exceptional skill, teamwork, and determination throughout the day were truly impressive. Congratulations to everyone involved!

On the football front, Ewan Bellairs recently returned from Perth, where he represented ACT in the U16 National Championships. As the team’s goalkeeper, Ewan performed admirably, helping the ACT side secure fourth place overall with two wins, one draw, and two losses. Congratulations to Ewan on his outstanding efforts throughout the tournament!

Lastly, Kai Mudford and Gus O’Connor represented ACT at the U12 National Rugby League Championships held in Canberra. The boys showcased their skills and teamwork throughout a demanding week, ultimately securing third place with a hard-fought win over Victoria in the playoff. This achievement is a testament to their hard work and dedication. Well done, Gus and Kai!

It’s been a term full of remarkable achievements and sportsmanship. We look forward to more exciting events and continued success throughout the year!
