Principal’s blog – 4 April 2022

April 4, 2022

Dear parents, students and staff

The end of Term 1 draws nigh. It has been a hectic and difficult term with COVID-19 infections, isolations, quarantining and sickness impacting student and staff attendance, with increasing absences in the second half of the term. Despite the difficulties, including the lack of casual staff, people are remaining as positive as they can and contributing effectively to the community. I particularly thank the staff for the extra load they have carried to keep classes running. I also acknowledge the students’ efforts too in remaining focused on their learning.

Our issues are bordering on the trivial compared to the plight of the people of Ukraine as they try to protect their safety and sovereignty. It is heartbreaking to see the images on television of the trauma, sadness and disruption the Ukrainians are facing. Pope Francis is reported to have referred to the situation as a ‘perverse use of power’. At school, we have prayed for the Ukrainians and all those in power to have the strength and courage to bring an end to the abuse.

If you have been driving around the College precinct you may have noticed the fencing on the corner of Krefft Street and Kingsford Smith Drive. It is in preparation for the erection of an odour control unit. Icon Water is managing the project and more information can be found at www.iconwater.com.au/bts

We say farewell officially to some staff who are leaving SFX for other adventures at the end of the term. In gratitude, we acknowledge Judy Knight, Chris Stewart, Janelle Stacey, Candace Spencer and Joe Igoe-Taylor who have each given sterling service to the SFX community. Their generous and selfless contribution has been very much appreciated and our best wishes go with each of them as they undertake a new direction in their personal and professional careers.

The Easter holidays begin this Friday 8 April. We move from the busyness of school, into the busyness of Holy Week in the first half of the stand-down period. As Christians, the liturgical events of the week—Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday—provide the reminder of why SFX even exists at all. The life and teachings of Jesus must be the axis on which the College revolves and I believe it is evident here. I hope you will find some time during the holidays (Holy Days!) to participate in the Holy Week liturgies in your local church. School resumes on Wednesday 27 April.

I pray you will have a restful and relaxing time with your family and friends over the Easter break. For those traveling, I hope your journey will be a safe one.

May you recognise God’s blessings in your daily lives.
