NAIDOC Mass and Yarn Circle yarns

A small and enthusiastic posse of students attended the NAIDOC Mass with Ms Sandra Darley, Ms Libby Goodsell, Ms Holly Bensley and Ms Senne Carroll. We were greeted by Wiradjuri Echoes who were there to provide a Smoking Ceremony. His Grace, Archbishop Christopher Prowse, participated in the Smoking Ceremony and warmly welcomed all into St Christophers prior to saying Mass. NAIDOC Mass is always a festive occasion with students greeting other students from different schools, teachers reconnecting with old friends and of course; catching up with our friends at St Francis Xavier Primary School Lake Cargelligo (affectionately known as Little SFX). The Mass was a wonderful way to celebrate our First Nations’ students and the choir was simply sublime (MacKillop College). Two of our students shared the reading—thank you to Noah M in Year 7 and Hannah D in Year 9.

In Week 3, we spent Yarn Circle time painting some decorative boomerangs provided by Aunty Selina Walker who also treated us to a Welcome to Country. Students had fun yarning while creating and snacking. Ms Goodsell had a beautiful moment when she realised that ‘it wasn’t the outcome of the boomerangs that mattered, but the chatter, banter and laughs.’ Yarn Circle was started with the intention of building community here at SFX and it is such a privilege to see students in this space and flourishing.
