May 17, 2024

The Preparation

During semester 1 at SFX, Year 11 and 12 Outdoor Education students have been extending their learning in preparation for their Murramarang South Coast Kayak and Hike Expedition for 3 days and 2 nights in Week 10 of Term 1. We explored local Canberra hikes at Mt Painter, The Arboretum, One Tree Hill and learned paddle techniques on the iconic Lake Burley Griffin before the bigger adventure outside of Australia’s Capital Territory.

Discussions in class:

“Canberra has many great sustainable initiatives that are in place to help us walk towards a greener and cleaner world.”

The Exploration

After much planning and preparation, here are some highlights of the stunning walks through the Murramarang National Park, NSW and also a beautiful day to paddle starting from the Batemans Bay bridge to Maloney’s Beach NSW. Students had to consider sustainability principles when packing and also planning their route through the national park. They battled through sunny and rainy conditions to create adventurous memories that has equipped them with life skills in the outdoor environments.

Conversations around the fire:

“One of the highlights of our trip was snorkeling in North Head Campground’s amazing rock pools. We spotted many fish, octopus and sea slugs. Among this were many beautiful beaches with pristine blue waters.”
