Kicking goals in 2024

May 17, 2024

We have had another exciting start to the term for sport at SFX.

A special congratulations to two of our students who have been successful in making the ACT School Sport Sides who will compete in the National Championship later this year.

Firstly, Hayden Schorsch made the U/15 AFL side and will compete in the Championship on the Gold Coast and Jade White who made the U/15 School girls side who will compete in Port Macquarie later in the year as well. Justin Burrows has also been selected to represent in the ACT Baseball Snr League team. He will play in the National Championship in Geelong. We are sure you will join us in wishing them the best of luck in their respective sides.

We had 5 students compete at the ACT Swimming Championship earlier in the term. All of these students should be proud of their efforts as they represented themselves and the college exceptionally in extremely competitive races. Well done to Arabella Allen, Oscar Yu, Joel Martyn, Zara Nicholson and Tahlia Rose.

On Tuesday the 14th, we had the 7/8 and 9/10 Boys Oztag Sides were out representing the College at the ACT Oztag Gala Day. Both sides started the day with solid results throughout the pool stages.  The 7/8 side ended the group stage undefeated beating defeating Calwell, Karabar, Gold Creek, Melba Copland and drawing with Belconnen High School. Their superior points differential ensured that they came 1st in their pool. The 9/10 side started with a draw against Daramalan College followed by strong victories against Melba and Melrose.

Due to a side withdrawing the morning of, they played Melba again and unfortunately lost by one try and this meant that they finished second in the pool stage and did not qualify for the finals. The 7/8 side played a see sawing finals game against Daramalan College. SFX scored a sensational try in the last set of the game to send it to extra time. In a highly competitive extra time period, Daramalan scored two tries to our 1 and unfortunately that resulted in a very tight loss. Congratulations to both teams who both played in great spirit throughout the day. A big thank you to the teachers and assistant coaches.

On the following day, we sent out our Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 girls to Oztag day. The 7/8 team showcased an exceptional performance in the recent Oztag carnival. Their journey through the competition was marked by consistent victories in each round game, demonstrating their skill, teamwork, and determination. Their offense was relentless scoring 24 tries in the round games whilst only conceding 3 goals in defense.

In the semi-final, the team faced Merici. The match was intense and competitive, the girls managed to secure a 5-2 victory. Their performance was a blend of strategic plays and impressive athleticism. Key moments included swift tag-outs, precise passes, and well-timed tries, all of which contributed to their win and advanced them to the grand final. The grand final saw the team go up against Daramalan. Despite their best efforts and a hard-fought battle, they were defeated with a score of 4-1. The match was challenging, with Daramalan proving to be a strong opponent. Special mention to the teams Senior coaches Jess and Amber who were fantastic across the day.

The 9/10 team started the day with an entertaining 3 all draw against Gold Creek. Followed by convincing victories against Melrose, Jerrabomberra and Kingsford Smith.  Similarly, to the 7/8 side the girls played with tenacity and teamwork throughout the day, also displaying great sportsmanship. The last pool game was against a strong Daramalan side and with a spot in the finals on the line, the girls played with great skill and sportsmanship but unfortunately it wasn’t enough and lost 4 to 2. Thank you to all the teachers and Senior coaches for helping throughout the day.

We also will have the 7/8 and 9/10 Girls Volleyball side out very soon to compete at the Northside Girls Volleyball Gala Day. I’m sure you will join me in wishing them the best of luck and we look forward to hearing about your results.

As always, if you have made an outside of school representative team or competed at a high level as an individual please let the school know so we can acknowledge your achievements!
