Mental Health, Healthy Relationships and Consent

May 16, 2024

Our Year 8 students had insightful sessions this term with visits from Menslink and Canberra Rape Crisis Centre (CRCC).

Menslink

In Week 13, a representative from Menslink came to St Francis Xavier to support our Year 8 boys through educating them about the importance of developing and identifying healthy relationships with people you can trust and talk openly with. The aim of Menslink is to develop a ‘check-in culture’ by dismantling the stereotype that men shouldn’t talk about their problems. The program helps to promote a positive help-seeking mindset in our young guys while providing guidance on how they can help a friend who may be struggling. After the presentation one student was willing to share how he has used the lessons learnt from the presentation and apply them in his own life:

Interviewer“What part about the presentation did you find appealed to you most?”

Student: “I enjoyed the presenter sharing his own experiences, I like hearing people share their stories it helps me understand the message better”

Interviewer“Did the presentation encourage you to think differently or take any specific actions?”

Student: “Absolutely, I now feel more comfortable opening up with friends who I had become distant with in year 7 and I have taken steps to rekindle these positive friendships after the presentation’

We look forward to welcoming Menslink back in the future and continuing to benefit from their invaluable support in fostering the personal growth and emotional well-being of our students.

Healthy Relationships and Consent

Over two sessions, our Year 8 students have explored key messages related to healthy relationships and consent ran by volunteers from the Canberra Rape Crisis Centre (CRCC). The CRCC also presented an evening webinar for our parent community.

The key messages shared by the CRCC for our students were focused on healthy relationships, exploring what helpful and harmful behaviors in relationships look like. As part of this discussion students considered the statistics for young people seeking support for issues in their lives and workshopped asking for help or asking a friend if they needed help. Students also had an opportunity to learn more about consent.

We value the time and resources that the CRCC have shared with our students.
