Construction and Woodwork, Term 3

August 23, 2024

Exciting projects have been unfolding in our Design and Technologies classes this term, showcasing the dynamic range of skills and creativity being developed by our students. In Year 8’s Applied Technology class, students dove into creating innovative hands-on projects, learning to design and build functional models using cutting-edge materials and techniques. Their projects are not only enhancing their understanding of technology but also sparking their imagination as they explore real-world applications.

In the Senior Construction classes for Years 11 and 12, students are taking on more complex challenges, working on detailed construction projects that require advanced planning, precision, and collaboration. Our senior students are applying their knowledge to create impressive structures, blending technical expertise with practical skills. The convergence of these projects across different year levels highlights the depth and breadth of our Design and Technologies curriculum, fostering a passion for innovation and craftsmanship among all our students.

Year 7 Applied Technology

Combining Design Thinking knowledge and practical skills, Year 7 and 8 students in Applied Technology are building trinket boxes. These are an extension on the time-honored pencil box, though with added individual flair as the students design their box for an identified end user. Skills are extended with the use of new tools and equipment, processes, various timber species and joining techniques to create an individual design, promoting the details of the timber.

Year 11 and 12 Construction

Both Year 11 and Year 12 Construction classes are building decks as a part of their respective ‘construction processes’ and ‘construction projects’ units. The decks are an excellent, trade orientated simulation to allow VET students to address the practical and time exposure needs of competencies being credited to their Certificate II in Construction Pathways. The simulation exposes the students to knowledge, skills and process, along with essential soft skills such as communication and working as a team. With the decks being built outside, the students also get to enjoy the benefits of the construction trade and Canberra Winters!
