AFL | Max Monaghan

After several trial matches representing the U16 GWS Academy against the Swans Academy Max was selected for the combined State Team (NSW/ACT) to play at the 2018 U16 AFL National Championships. He was one of only two Canberra players to make the state team. Congratulations, Max!

Gymnastics

Congratulations to Simon Bewick who recently came first in the Gymnastics National competition with his floor routine. Well done, Simon!

Indoor Cricket

Caitlin (U17) and Jessica Galeano (U14) have been selected to compete at the National Indoor Cricket Championships in Toowoomba, Queensland from the 7^th-14^th July. Jessica was also named as captain of the U14 team. Good luck to both girls!

Taekwondo

Congratulations to Jessica Sly who competed in the Taekwondo Festival in Sydney on the 3^rd and 4^th June. Jessica fought in three fights, winning 1 gold and 2 silver medals. Well done to Gabby Calderazzo who has won a position in the ACT High Performance Program for Taekwondo.  She has worked extremely hard to get this opportunity and in early July will have the chance to compete for a place on the Australian team, competing in Taipei later this year.

Soccer

On Tuesday June 5 the College Boys soccer team turned up to a very chilly morning in Lyneham. With only 11 players and no subs the day was always going to be tough, but the boys started the day with their spirits high. Our first game was very well played, dominating possession in both halves but unable to find the net, and a lucky ball from Canberra College securing their 1-0 victory against us. In our next two games the boys really played their hearts out, playing back to back games with almost no rest breaks they were tired but still managed a 2-1 victory over Trinity, followed by a 2-1 victory over Erindale which included being down to 10 men in the late stages from a red card. In our final match, still with only 10 players, we went down 4-0 to the group leaders Lake G. I cannot commend the players highly enough on how well they did on the day with no subs, they just put their heart into every game and did the college very proud. Players of the day were Jack White and Bailey O’Connor at the back, who were everywhere they needed to be on the pitch and shut down play after play, as well as Albert George in goal who made some spectacular saves all day! Great effort team!

Cross Country

Well done to all students who competed at the ACT Cross Country carnival on Wednesday 13^th June at Mt. Stromlo!

Rugby 7s

Congratulations to Caitlin Quester who has been selected to receive a scholarship to the inaugural ACT Academy of Sport Women’s Rugby 7s program.  Very exciting times for her!  As part of the program, Caitlin will be training at the AIS twice a week.

Netball

On the 25^th June, SFX hosted Townsville Grammar school in a game of Netball in the school gym. The match was played in great spirit and saw the SFX team run out 36-16 winners. Well done to all students who showed fantastic maturity and played the game in the right spirit!

Hockey

On Wednesday 20th June the Year 7/8 boys Hockey team competed in the ACT Hockey Gala day. The boys had mixed results throughout the day, winning two of their games. The students represented the college beautifully and made SFX proud. Well done to all of the students who were competing in their first hockey tournament and to the more experienced players who lead the team.

9/10 Boys Hockey team.

The Year 9/10 boys hockey team played well and made a fantastic effort throughout the day. The boys showed great teamwork and enthusiasm in all games.

Rugby 10s

The 9/10 Girls Rugby 10s team was great to work with. They competed hard all day with mixed results. The more experienced girls supported and coached the girls who were new to the sport and the student coaches, Ruben Amosa and Tom Jackson were fantastic!

Towards the end of Term 1, the 7/8 Boys Rugby team contested the Brumbies Shield on what would be one of the hottest April days on record, with temperatures nudging 32 degrees.

The team’s first game was against Radford. SFX were rusty to begin with but soon overpowered their opposition, 17 – 0.

The second game was against Campbell High. Some new combinations were experimented with as we started to see greater cohesion. SFX again ran out winners, 24 – 7.

By this stage it was apparent that we would be meeting our next opposition, the also-undefeated John Paul College, in the final, so this game was important to maintain momentum while also getting a psychological edge. The game started poorly for SFX in the midday heat and within the first five minutes, JPC had crossed for three tries, two of which were from basic errors, to be up 0 – 17 SFX didn’t panic though, and the promise we had shown in our previous two games finally saw our combinations click as we scored two quick tries to go into the break down by 7 after two unconverted tries. The second half was a fierce tussle in the heat as we scored again, only for them to score as well. Down 17 – 22 with only seconds left, SFX scored again, converting the try to take the lead for the first time as we won 24 – 22.

The final against JPC was almost an anti-climax after the come-from-behind victory, as we controlled the game scoring the first two tries and never gave up the lead. In the end the 24 – 17 winning margin was a fair indication of the difference between the teams, with SFX running out ACT champions.
