Book Week 2019 – Reading is my Secret Power
August 15, 2019Next week is Book Week, a celebration of the joy of reading, Aussie authors and awesome books. The 2019 Book Week theme is ‘Reading is my Secret Power’ and we will be celebrating on Wednesday 21 August.
Dress up or wear a t-shirt
On Wednesday, students can dress up or even just wear a fun t-shirt for a gold coin donation.
What to wear: Students can dress up as their favourite Superhero/Book Character or they may just like to wear a superhero/book character t-shirt.
Donation: Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation. Funds raised will go to our sister school – St Francis Xavier Primary School in Lake Cargelligo, NSW.
Activities
To celebrate we will be hosting a range of fun activities during lunchtime.

Book Sale
A big thank you to everyone that has donated pre-loved books for the Book Fair. Books will be sold for a gold coin donation from Monday 19 August until sold out. Funds raised will go to our sister school – St Francis Xavier Primary School in Lake Cargelligo, NSW.
Reading is my Secret Power
But how is it a Secret Power you might ask? Well, did you know…
- Reading narrative fiction develops a reader’s sense of empathy. 1
- Reading enjoyment is the best predictor of university entrance, regardless of socio-economic status. 2
- Engaged reading can overcome traditional barriers to reading achievement, including gender, parental education & income. 3
- Just six minutes a day can reduce stress by 68%. 4
- Reading has positive cognitive benefits beyond just comprehension. Reading improves vocabulary, verbal intelligence and general knowledge. 5
- More readers volunteer for non-profit organisations (42%) than non-readers (25%). 6
- Children who have a positive attitude to reading are significantly less likely to report mental health problems. 7
