Solidarity in our history, as well as today

April 2, 2020

‘Follow the Rabbit Proof Fence,’ by Doris Pilkington Smith, ‘Sister Heart,’ by Sally Morgan and the story of K’Gari (www.sbs.com.au/kgari/) were just some of the texts explored by the Year 8 Humanities students this term. Students were asked to respond to the question: How do stories help us to understand the experiences and points of view of others?

As they endeavoured to better understand these perspectives, students engaged in a variety of visual literacy activities such as ‘creating images’ as they were read ‘Sister Heart.’  Students have been repeatedly drawing connections between the concepts of solidarity and empathy, through the texts which they have been analysing by applying their historical knowledge of Australia. Evidence of their empathy, compassion and solidarity are evident in their beautifully considered works, so we have decided to share some of these with you today.
