Busy in sports

Another busy couple of weeks for sport around the College with students participating in a wide variety of sports.

Basketball

The College Boys and Girls basketball sides participated in the Kate Tominac and John Stelzer Cup. Both sides represented the College with distinction and were very competitive in all games. The girls came up against some very skilful opposition throughout the day. The girls got better in each game and finished the day with one draw and three losses.

The boys were in a similar boat coming up some very well drilled sides that compete at a high level regularly. They continued to show improvement as a team throughout the day and that resulted in a victory against a very strong side.

Soccer

Our Year 7/8 soccer teams were out at the Northside Gala day last week. The boys performed extremely well in the group stages and beat the previously undefeated Daramalan College in the final game of the group to ensure they progressed to the finals. They then came up against a very fancied Belconnen High School side in the semi final and after a goal on the counter they took a lead and managed to hold on for a great victory. That meant that they came up against Daramalan College in the final and in a seesawing game the boys unfortunately conceded a late goal to lose the final 2-1. Well done on a great effort boys.

The girls had an extremely successful day and they cruised through the group stage undefeated and without conceding a single goal! They won the semi final in similar fashion. The grand final was a different story and came up against a well-coached opposition. It a nervous affair, the girls snuck home an early goal and managed to hold in in a tight affair to win the grand final 1-0. Well done to everyone involved and a big thank you to Miss V for coaching the side.

The Year 9/10 Soccer Gala days were also recently held at Dickson Ovals. The boys competed hard in all group games and saw some improvement in their performance. Although the boys didn’t progress past the group stage, they can be happy with how they performed and represented the College. Well done to Mr Stormon and the rest of the boys.

The Girls also had a successful day. They managed to win two group games against Burgmann and Canberra High to progress to the semi-finals. They then managed a tough 1-0 victory against a very strong Campbell High side in the semi final. This meant that the girls progressed to the final against Daramalan, the side to defeat them in a group game. In a very tight tussle, a coaching masterstroke by Miss Seeney led to the girls scoring a goal on the counter and then holding off a strong Daramalan College. Well done to Miss Seeney and all involved on the day.

Oztag

The College boys Oztag side travelled to Southwell Park to compete in the ACT Oztag Carnival. The boys started the day extremely well and were undefeated throughout the group stage. That continued into the semi-final, where the boys secured a very dominant win against John Paul College. That ensured that we progressed to the final against Gungahlin College. In a very tight tussle, the boys went down 3-2 in the final. Well done to all involved on the day.
