Performing Arts Department

The Performing Arts Department at St Francis Xavier College offers opportunities to students from Years 7-12 for the study of Music, Drama, Dance, Media and Theatre Arts. Students study electronic music and an instrument of their choice, learn about acting for stage and screen in our theatre and TV studio, dance in different styles and create short films. The well-equipped Performing Arts complex comprises a theatre with a comprehensive sound and lighting booth, sound studio and multipurpose spaces that give students the opportunity to perform in an authentic environment and also enables them to become proficient in the use of technical equipment.

As performance is an integral part of our curriculum, Assemblies, Masses, Information Evenings and Special Performance Nights are enriched by the talent and involvement of Music, Dance, Drama and Media students. The School Musical, Variety Nights, Dance Ensemble performances and Drama Nights also showcase the skills developed by our students.

Private music tuition is available on most instruments for those students who wish to develop their skills.

A Band program is available for any student with any ability as we employ a range of instrumental teachers to support learning in the band program. Rehearsals are two hours per week during school time. Students interested in singing can join Choir and Advanced Vocal Group. These groups practise during lunch times and one class per week. A singing teacher is also available for students who wish to develop their talent.

Our curriculum is delivered in Semester units, allowing for flexibility and individual student's needs. Classes usually work on a project that is then performed for an audience at the end of the semester.

All students in Year 7 study Performing Arts (Music, Drama, Movement, and some Media) for a term.

In Year 8 students are able to elect music, dance, and drama for a semester

In Years 9 and 10 Music, Dance, Drama (which includes acting for screen) is available for either a one or two year program.

Our Senior College offers a wide range of units in Dance, Drama, Media and Music. We also offer Live Production and Services, a VET Course in the technical aspects of theatre and events for students in Year 10,11 and 12. Currently this course is provided “off-line” .

St Francis Xavier College in conjunction with the Canberra Theatre Centre also has a Memorandum of Understanding where students in Year 11 and 12 Live Production and Services are able to work on professional shows with staff from the theatre.
