After starting as the St Francis Xavier Sports Coordinator 5 weeks ago, I have been very impressed with the amount of enthusiasm and willingness to be involved in school sport from our students, parents and staff. I had the privilege of attending the College Swimming Carnival on Thursday 6 March and was really proud of not only the high standard of athletes we have in our College but all students who participated and involved themselves in the event, with enthusiasm and good spirits. Thank you to Lee Dwyer and Maria Miniutti from the Physical Education Department who organised this event. Kelly Candy – Sports Coordinator
The College will receive the award by the Order of Australia Association ACT Branch under the awards established for student citizenship and community service, in particular for the work Year 10 have done with students of Cranleigh School. The Association found this pro-active, inclusive and sustained participation with disabled students particularly valuable. The Association does and will continue to contribute to the inclusion of people with disabilities in our society.
All students are encouraged to participate in community service throughout their time at St Francis Xavier College.
A small representative delegation of staff, students and parents will attend the presentation of awards to occur at the Royal Canberra Golf Club, Yarralumla Wednesday 27 November.
Congratulations to College Captain Nicholas Arganese for being awarded the 2013 ACT Vocational Student of the Year. This award was presented the ACT Training Excellence Awards and Nicholas was the winner of the Certificate II in Creative Industries (Media) category.
We run the Accelerated Reading program at SFX with all students in Year 7 & 8. The program works by individually setting students reading targets based on their reading ability. Students that have read an exceptional amount in the program - having read over one million words - are then invited into the Millionaire’s Club. We celebrated their achievements recently by having them work with the Kindergarten students from St John the Apostle Primary School recently and hosting a morning tea in their honour.
We were invited to enter a team in 2013 to challenge other Australian schools that participate in the Accelerated Reader program. 10 ‘Millionaires’ were asked to be involved in the challenge and 10 very excited Millionaires accepted. They were all given a reading target based on their reading ability for the period that runs from 5 August to 13 September. Each week we submit our results of which are tallied and displayed on the company’s website http://readingchallenge.com.au. We are doing exceptionally well, coming first place at this point in the competition!
