Senior Arts Students Explore Enlighten

March 12, 2025

Students from Senior Art, Media and Photography spent last Friday night exploring creative installations at Canberra’s Enlighten Festival.

They started the evening by meeting feature artist, Matthew Aberline, who kindly spoke to the students about his artworks and process. Matthew grew up and went to school here in West Belconnen and, after graduating school, has explored a range of creative pursuits including costume design and a fashion line before finding his joy creating large, glowing, joyously colourful artworks that have been exhibited internationally. Matthew’s work has featured at Enlighten for some years now, but this is the first year his work illuminated the National Library.

The students enjoyed hearing about Matthew’s journey and process and then spent the rest of the evening viewing the various illuminations, with the photography students exploring techniques to capture light and movement.

The evening culminated at the National Gallery, where the creator of the NGA’s latest acquisition – Ouroboros, Lindy Lee is displaying illuminations on the walls of the Gallery.

Students in the Art faculty, will be exploring many of the themes explored during the evening in their various classes over the semester.
