BYOD: Year 7 & 10, 2024
January 10, 2024St Francis Xavier College has moved to a bring your own device (BYOD) program. BYOD is a program where students bring their own devices to school to enhance their learning, instead of the College purchasing and leasing them to students. The transition to this model has been staggered over three years. This means that each student enters Year 7 and Year 10, they move on to the BYOD program until all year groups are part of the program.
Families with students in either Years 7 or 10 in 2024, must have procured a suitable device for them to use from the start of the 2024 school year.
There are two options under the new BYOD program:
College Supported BYOD | Home Supported BYOD |
---|---|
This is the recommended BYOD option, particularly for families with limited computer knowledge. This approach is where parents don’t need to worry about the software, maintenance and repairs. | Parents take FULL responsibility for purchasing, software, maintenance and repairs. |
Parents purchase laptops from (Learning With Technologies – LWT) Devices have been preselected by SFX and meet or exceed the minimum/required specifications. LWT offer both outright purchase or payment plan options. | Parents buy laptops from anywhere—as long as they meet the SFX minimum Home Supported BYOD Specifications Specifications may be complicated to understand. We recommend printing them out to take shopping with you. Devices must be Windows platform only. No MacOS. |
Laptops come with 3-year Manufacturer Warranty and Accidental Damage Insurance (ADP). | Laptops may only have a warranty if you request it from where you buy the laptop from. |
SFX provides full tech support and set up of new devices for students. | SFX provides minimal technical support to students other than WiFi / printing set up and assistance. Parents are responsible for support and repairs. |
Repairs take place at the College, most within 24-48 hours. | Depending on where you purchased the laptop or what brand it is, if it breaks it may have to be sent out of Canberra for repairs. You may need to find a third-party repairer to assist. |
SFX provides a temporary device while a laptop is being repaired (based on the availability of a spare device). | Parents must provide a temporary device that meets minimum specs during any repairs. |
Devices should be purchased from LWT by end of October to ensure delivery for Term 1 2024 start. | Laptops can be purchased anytime until the first day of school in 2023. |
