Intimate Ash Wednesday Pastoral Liturgies
March 11, 2022Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, preparing us for Easter, the most important time in the Church’s calendar. The marking of the ashes on our foreheads or on our palms on this day is a public expression of our faith and humility. It is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
This year instead of gathering all together in the gym, the SFX community shared intimate Ash Wednesday liturgies in their Pastoral Care classes, allowing students to be involved in the readings and running the ceremony. It was a meaningful start to the season of Lent and the students enjoyed singing in their class groups.
Ashes were distributed during break times in the Chapel, with many students and staff reverently attending the ceremonial placement of ashes into their palms—a reminder to all of us of the Lenten promises we will make in our own lives.
Lent is the time of year that we are reminded of those vulnerable communities who do not have access to the basic needs of human life. As part of our almsgiving promise, SFX bands together to raise money for Cartias Australia’s Project Compassion through many different fundraising activities in term 1.
