Leaping into Health and Physical Education
March 31, 2023The Health and Physical Education faculty has leapt into 2023 with gusto! Our Year 7 students began their HPE journey at St Francis Xavier College with a Minor Games unit, accompanied by their Eat Well, Live Well Health unit where they have been understanding the importance of healthy nutrition for themselves and those around them. They are developing their Athletics skills across all disciplines in preparation for the SFX Athletics Carnival early in Term 2. Years 8, 9 and 10 have continued their Health and Physical Education journeys by participating in a wide range of physical activity units including Frisbee, Oztag, World and First Nations Games, Court Sports, Cricket, Hockey, Fitness and Challenge, and European Handball with Tchoukball. In their Health units they have explored their understanding of alcohol and drugs, and mental health and wellness.
Our Years 9 and 10 Sport and Recreation students have already completed major activities within their units, with Year 9 students completing their First Aid and CPR practical assessments and engagement with Community Sports, and Year 10 attending the exciting Surf Camp on the coast. As part of this elective subject, students attend regular excursions to enhance their understanding and application of their learning. Highlights so far in 2023 include an excursion to Bounce and Rock Climbing which saw students challenge their own fears to scale heights on the walls.
In College, the Outdoor Education students have had wonderful and authentic experiences as part of the Discover Outdoor Environments unit, including expeditions to Gibraltar Rocks and an upcoming day trip to Kosciuszko National Park. In Term 2, they will be heading on a brilliant five day camp to Moreton Island as part of their assessment which is sure to be an amazing experience for all involved. The Years 11 and 12 Physical Education Studies classes have immersed themselves in the world of Leisure and Recreation activities, forging the connection between lifelong health and wellbeing and the range of activities available to them throughout their lives. A few particular favourites have included Golf and Lawn Bowls!
