Year 7’s First Week
February 20, 2020Year 7 Start 2020 on the Right Foot
“We Journey Together with Truth and Courage,” is the College theme for 2020 and perfectly represents the beginning of the journey that the new Year 7 students have begun at SFX. It has been a great start with plenty of smiling faces and blossoming friendships. The week began with the Year 7 Orientation Day where students were introduced into their Pastoral groups and their Pastoral Leaders. These groups form the basis of the Pastoral Care program at SFX and provide the opportunity for long-lasting and meaningful relationships to be made. On Monday, students also spent time with the tricky new locks which took a bit of practice and plenty of patience to figure out. New timetables were handed out, different classes were explained and students were taken on a tour to see their new classrooms. The afternoon was spent in elective classes getting a taste of the broad curriculum on offer at SFX.
Tuesday brought with it some new challenges as the rest of the school started back and the Year 7s soon realised that they are on the bottom of the pack. However, they bravely soldiered on and managed to navigate the hallways and corridors full of bigger and noisier older students. The rest of the week has been about getting into the routine of school and finding our groove. All of the Year 7 teachers of HUMS and STEMS have been thoroughly impressed with the great start the students have made to classes.
Their behaviour and attitude in the classroom have been exemplary and they have set a very high standard to begin the year. The challenge now must be to maintain those standards and keep this great start going for as long as possible. iPads have begun to be rolled out through HUMS classes and this technology will no doubt add an extra layer of sophistication to the teaching and learning in Middle School classrooms.
Overall, it has been a bright start and the future is looking good for Year 7. The next big item on the calendar is Year 7 camp at Collaroy which will be an exciting and positive experience as we continue to settle into life at SFX.
