Debating at SFX
September 3, 2018By Donella Johnston and Sarah Kearns
Congratulations to our SFX debating team for their excellent performance in this semester’s ACT Debating Union’s Fictional Worlds Competition.
The team, Year 7 students, Millie Alston-Campbell, Sarah Kerr, Cassie Merrick, Claire Rabetts and Alicia Regan, competed in a four-round competition, winning 3 out of the four debates. They debated topics on the themes in four well-known ‘fictional worlds’; Mulan, Shrek, Aladdin and Moana.
“This was our first time debating together but it was incredible and we all clicked really well, when we debate we can think of anything and everything. Even though we didn’t win all our debates we wouldn’t change a thing” says Millie Alston-Campbell (debater).
Alicia Regan also enjoyed the experience saying “it has been our first time debating together as a group, but we’ve all worked really well together and we’re all really proud of what we’ve achieved!”.
Their next challenge is the ACT Legislative Assembly Interschool Parliamentary Debating held Friday 7 September. We wish them all the best.
The Debating Club meets every Tuesday Lunch 2 in M5.
