Mathematics at SFX
August 25, 2023This semester we are excited to be taking two spirited teams of Year 10 Extension Mathematics students to the Burgmann Maths Day. Throughout this event students will compete in several challenging problem-solving activities, test their teamwork and collaboration skills, and have lots of fun. A huge thank you to Ms Alevizos and Ms Conn for leading this initiative.
Last term during our Open Day we invited our prospective Year 7 students to answer the question ‘What is Mathematics’. Their responses were delightful and insightful, ranging from difficult or fun, to patterns and problem-solving. This has prompted us to examine the difference in the perception of Mathematics from Year 7 to Year 10. We posed the same question to our current Year 10 students and found that while some of them still see Maths as a bit of a chore, they recognise its importance in problem solving, its connection to other subject areas and its importance in everyday life.
You can see a visual with all the responses from both groups in the enclosed MindMaps.
We would like to end this article with a little Maths riddle…
I add six to eleven and get five. Why is this correct?
